Throws & Take Downs

Week 3:

Tuesday - TMD Martial Arts (Throws & Take Downs). One thing we did in class today as well as last class was we would all sit in a big circle forming an arena in the middle. Then two people would get in the ring, bow and try to take each other down. The winner stays in the ring and then the next person in the circle gets up and has a turn in the ring. So, if you're really good and others can't take you down succesfully then you end up being really tired!

Warm up in the beginning of the class consists of everyone running in a circle on the mats in one direction, then do 10 jumping jacks, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups. Run in the other direction, stop and do 9 jumping jacks, 9 push-ups, 9 sit-ups. We continue this routine until we get down to 1. I could tell my body was fatigued today because this warm-up (especially the push-ups) seemed to take more out of me then normal. My body feels soooo exhausted. Gotta let my body rest...

Compilation of Race Results

Today was a very much needed day of rest since legs were extremely sore from running up and down all those hills yesterday. I decided it would be cool to list all the races I've done. I guess it looks like my first race was in 1998. Also, I introduced my mom to her first race in 1999...and what's crazy is that she got so into it that she became a run leader at the YMCA and runs marathons!!!

My results seem to be so erradic....probably due to last minute training or to no training at all. I don't think I can run a 10 km race without training for it anymore...it's too much torture at this age....I think I'll invest in a stopwatch so that I can work at getting better times.

Beat by Grandmas

Shaughnessy 8 km run was today. It became very apparent that I was in over my head with all the hills in the Kerrisdale area when I found myself walking up the first hill. The 2 times that I trained prior to this run was at the track which is obviously completely flat. I will have to make sure I include hill training next time. Also, the continued running up and down the hills put a lot of stress on my ankles and knees and I even started to get a cramp on my right side. No excuses though-shame on me for not training enough. The funny thing is that when the Contender theme song came on, it got me pumped but what really carried me through the run at the end was this really old lady who was running atleast 20 meters ahead of me and we were running up a hill. I thought oh my god, I can't give up...I have to keep running up this hill 'coz this old lady is doing it and wtf why is she ahead of me! She was my inspiration and gave me more motivation than any song could've given me. The Contender boxers are young, strong, male athletes in their prime but here is this old lady with grey hair and who had to be atleast 70 yrs. old, kicking my butt up the hill. I was actually struggling to catch up to her. I eventually passed her but I felt bad because....because....well because she is like 70!!! So, in short, it was an eye opening experience for me. I know what I need to work on now.

Race Results here

I came in 374 out of 413....pretty embarassing...I just read through the results and apparently there were two ladies in the 70-74 age range. One finished 5 mins earlier than me and the other finished it just 13 secs after me!!! ugh!!!

Everytime I run, there is so much conflict and mental struggle in my head. While running, I always find I'm questioning myself as to why I continue to torture myself. Yet I still continue to sign myself up for these things. I have come to realize that I really don't like the act of running itself that much but maybe its the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that I get for sticking through with it to the end. I've never been great at long distance running. I was always a sprinter in track and field. One day my coach signed me up for a long distance run at a track meet. I was furious as it was not one of the events that I usually enter in. I remember it started to rain half way through the race and I remember it being a huge struggle. But I also remember how pleased I was at myself for finishing it and I think this is how it will always be.

Half Horse Half Slug

Picked up my race package for tomorrow's Shaughnessy 8 km run and ended up buying a pair of dri fit 'no show' Nike socks and Speed Laces. The speed laces are great! No more tying my shoelaces and a time saver for the tri! Also, bought a new pair of Nike shorts for the run tomorrow because it will be hot! My muscles are still sore as ever especially my arms and neck. This soreness has to be from the kayaking in addition to the Martial Arts. I'm having to move like a slug in order to not be in too much pain. My shoulder muscle started cramping up as I was parallel parking today...ugh! I've been drinking lots of water mixed with glutamine in hopes that it will minimize the pain but I'm sure I'll be running tomorrow with stiff muscles and it looks like I won't have anytime today to soak in the tub with epsom salts.

All this training is making me eat like a horse. 2 burgers in one meal is the norm now and I'm finding that I'm constantly hungry! (I'm eating like a horse whilst moving like a slug!)

Loaded up my ipod mini with new songs for tomorrow. I can't wait to run to the Contender Theme song. I'm more excited about that than the actual run itself! :D

Paying the Price

Today I'm paying the price of all the training from yesterday. My whole body is sore and arms are bruised and scratched. The bruises must be from all the throwing and take downs and it's evident on my body that some people didn't cut their nails. I need to move as little as possible today...

Week 2:

Friday - Day of Rest

Cauliflower Ears

We only have kickboxing classes once in awhile so I've been really looking forward to today's class especially with all the Contender boxing I've been watching lately. I tried to apply what I learnt from watching all those episodes. It made me secretly smile inside whenever i made clean contact with someones face but then 5 secs. later I would feel bad and I would ask them if I punched them too hard hehe...We also practiced some clinches and people's gloves kept rubbing my ears and it started feeling all hot and tingly so I was getting paranoid of getting cauliflower ears! If you've seen what cauliflower ears look like they are not the prettiest sight but I've been reassured that it takes a lot to get your ears like that. Phew! One of the craziest Pride figthers Sakuraba has ears like this (click here). My brother said that the hardcore fighters who get these cauliflower ears would laugh at me! But looks like i'm not the only one scared of getting cauliflower ears :) click here for pic
All in all, today was a good training day.

Got with nature

Virginia, Dawn, and I had a nice hike up at Lighthouse Park today..what a gorgeous view, walked into some webbing (yuk), got slightly lost, climbed up on some rocks and took pics on a regular camera with the timer, carved our initials on a tree, and ate a fruit salad on a small cliff overlooking the water.

(Dawn will get her pics developed and hopefully they will look great and I can post here.)

Later we headed to Deep Cove for a picnic by the water and kayaked for my first time! It was a lot of fun and such a great way to get with nature (i picked up a starfish at the shore...it felt all squishy and cool!)

Here's the update for my physical activies:

Week 2:

Tuesday - Missed TMD because of CONTENDER finale but atleast did over 50 (double punching situps) after watching it. Alfonso Gomez vs. Jesse Brinkly for 3rd place. Awesome fight! Gomez won!

Wednesday - Hiked 2 hrs. & Kayaked 1.5 hrs.

*Side Note-Laptop is fixed...words cannot describe how happy i am now! :)

A Blog is BORN

I'm in a rush as I was supposed to get ready about an hour ago to go for a run except instead I started a blog (which is something i was sure i would never do). I'll have to decide whether or not i want to keep this blog.
.......................................................................................................

Back from my run and i decided i would keep the blog and use it as a Training Journal. I've been recording my physical activities (athletic) in a notebook so that I can keep track of my progress but i just realized it would be a great idea to record it online and at the same time share it with whoever was interested. (I'm thinking Alan might be somewhat interested since he will also be training for
mini triathlons). I'm only on my 2nd week of consiously training.
The end goal is:

Pacific Spirit Sprint Triathlon - September 18, 2005
600m swim - 18 km bike - 5.2 km run
..............................................................................

Training Schedule:

Week 1:
Tuesday -1 hr. Martial Arts
Wednesday - RUN 7 laps x 400 m = 2.8 km

Week 2:
Monday - RUN 9 laps x 400 m = 3.6 km (approx. 26 mins.)
